New fair work rights to disconnect and for gig workers

The federal government’s “Closing the Loopholes Bill” was passed by Parliament last week which will in due course result in amendments to federal workplace laws including a right of employees in the federal system to not facilitate after hours contact from employers unless the employee is acting unreasonably, a right to refer disputes about those issues to the Fair Work Commission.

In addition  the new laws endeavour to better define what is means by casual employment and what is employment and what is contracting, new powers for the Fair Work Commission to deal with sham contracting and unfair contract terms and finally a right for some gig workers to apply to the Commission for resolution of various industrial matters.
