The pandemic currently sweeping the world will have awful economic consequences. Australia’s Minister of Finance today publicly conceded that it will send many business, large and small, to the wall, and will be responsible for the loss of many jobs. Australia’s employment laws are in many ways not ready for these implications, and do not easily lend themselves to the management of the short and medium term anticipated effects of it.
